I am husband to Carrie, dad to Matthew, Lucas, and Natalie. I have a desire to see people grow in their relationship with Jesus. My personal mission is to move people forward in their faith life.

Gracefully Broken

As we begin a New Year today, I have to let you in on a struggle. The struggle is that I start each year with the best of intentions. I spend time reading my bible reading plan, but have a hard time making it through the entire year. My desire fades part way through the year. I find myself running on autopilot by the middle of summer. Then by the end of the year, I’m simply hanging on for dear life!  Continue reading

The Eighth Day of Christmas

On the eighth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
Eight maids a milking.

Throughout this post-Christmas journey, we’ve been looking at the word of the famous 12 Days of Christmas song. Each morning we dive into another meaning hidden behind the silly and often awkward gift we are to receive. Today is really not different. Cloaked in the gift of milking maidens we find another reminder of where God is in the world today. Hidden behind this gift stands another promise of God’s presence in the simple and often overlooked things in life.  Continue reading

The Seventh Day of Christmas

On the seventh day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
seven swans a swimming.

Now to be completely honest, it’s super easy to forget about these days being days of Christmas since we seem to be so far removed from the celebration itself. I mean seriously, the garbage trucks have already cleared the wrappings, boxes, and in many cases, even the trees! It seems like things are returning to normal already. But today is the 7th day of Christmas. And today’s gift is a gift of 7. Continue reading

The Sixth Day of Christmas

On the sixth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
Six Geese a Laying.

Now if you’ve been tracking with us for the past few days, then this one probably won’t be all that much of a surprise to you. Numbers are pretty important in the bible. Each number has its own significance and meaning. And the number six is no different. On this sixth day of Christmas we celebrate the six days of creation and the reminder that even though it looks complete it wasn’t finished until day seven when God rested. Continue reading

The Fifth Day of Christmas

On the fifth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
Five Golden Rings.

If you remember the story of wisemen brining gifts to the baby Jesus, you’ll remember those gifts to be gold, incense and myrrh. Now that we are five days into our Christmas celebration you undoubtedly have received a gift or two yourself. Perhaps your gifts are different? Maybe you received money to buy what you really need most. Perhaps it was clothing that filled the boxes under your tree. Maybe it was something practical that you wouldn’t buy yourself. Whatever it was, Christmas is a season of giving and receiving. Continue reading

The Fourth Day of Christmas

On the fourth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me

four calling birds.

Would you believe that this is likely not the way the song was worded originally? We’re so used to having received the 4 calling birds on day 4 that anything seems a little strange. But in all likelihood the word calling was actually the word colly when the song was first written. But what in the world is a colly bird? Continue reading

The Third Day of Christmas

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me,
Three french hens…

Every day from Christmas to Epiphany brings another gift. And each gift has a meaning. We’ve already looked at the 2 turtle doves and the partridge in a pear tree, so today let’s take a peak at these 3 french hens.  Continue reading

The Second Day of Christmas

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me two turtle doves.

In today’s culture it’s fairly easy to thin that today Christmas is over. The trees in our living rooms are starting to lose too many needles and causing a mess. The lights, while a beautiful addition to our homes are running the electric bill a little higher than we’d like. The extra decorations are starting to feel a bit like clutter already. And this doesn’t include the extra trash in our homes due to all of the gifts we’ve just unwrapped.  Continue reading

Above All Names – 4 Names New Names

On Christmas Eve we took a closer look at the four titles that woudl define this child born. He will be one whose wisdom shatters earthly wisdom. His strength would obliterate enemies but not in fighting but humility and vulnerability. His love would be that of a Father willing to give it all for you. And his reign would bring peace forevermore, a peace that can’t be taken away. Listen as Pastor Derrick shares a special Christmas Eve message about a name that is Above All Names.
