Load vs Limit

This week in worship we looked at a bible word that may be familiar to many, but misunderstood by some. We’ve probably heard it spoken. Maybe we’ve even read it a time or two. But do we really know what it means? The word is Sabbath. It’s a word that we often translate as day of rest or something along those lines.  Continue reading

All My Hope

There are days in life when reality strikes you square between the eyes. Days when your past catches up to you. Days when your struggles become all too real. There are days when moments turn to eternity as you feel the pain of regret and shame. There are days when you look in the mirror and can’t believe the person you’ve become. Days when all hope seems lost. Continue reading

Load vs Limits

All too often we let the load of life exceed our limits or capacity to carry. This week we dig into one of the 10 Commandments and look for the underlying message. When we pull the words off the page, what comes with it?

This week Pastor Derrick leads us deeper into an understanding of the commandments. Why did God give them? What does it mean that Jesus fulfilled them? How are we to now live in light of them?

The laws less about rules and more about relationships.

Unraveled

Several weeks as worship ended, one of the ladies at church who’s a hugger did the usual hug on the way out the door. She was wearing one of those nicely knit sweaters and I had my lapel microphone clipped on my tie. As she backed away from the hug we realized that we were still connected. The clasp on my microphone grabbed her sweater and didn’t want to let go. The farther she pulled, the more the sweater began to unravel. Continue reading

Should’ve Been Me

Some days in life are those should have, would have, could have kind of days. You know the days when you look back and realize you should have done something different. You could have done it completely in a different way. And I you had a chance you’d go back and do that part of your life over again you most certainly would not do it the same way again!  Continue reading

Isaiah 6

Today we begin a new sermon series that will take us through the summer. It’s a series aimed at tracing the red letters of Jesus and following them through the Bible. We’ll be spending the majority of this series in the Old Testament, looking at the promises of God for his people. This week Pastor Derrick shares some highlights of what it means to follow Jesus as King of kings. He also touches on the power of our baptisms.

Pentecost

A special day that marked a new beginning for what God was doing in the world. Pentecost was the day when God overflowed the cups of the disciples. In this message Pastor Derrick opens up two words from the original language. Listen and learn what it means to receive this gift of the spirit.

All In

Recently a friend asked me what my favorite bible verse was. Now that admittedly is a difficult task, especially for a pastor. We have so many bible verses floating through our minds. So many of them with significant meaning. I mulled this over for weeks. Probably longer. But eventually it hit me. The one verse that just jumped off the page was right there the entire time. It was a verse that had meaning to my uncle who was a pastor. It was a verse spoken at his funeral. It’s a verse in one of my favorite hymns. Continue reading

A Different Kind of Math

The other night I was watching a little television to clear my head. There is generally not a lot good on the tv but one of those game shows popped on that caught my interest. It was a game called Genius Junior. The gist of the game was simple young people generally middle school-aged would solve nearly impossible problems in ridiculously short amounts of time. The math questions were the most startling!  Continue reading

Rescuer

One of my favorite bands has to be Rend Collective. Their style is just so unique and fun. One of their most recent songs is titled Rescuer. It’s a straight up gospel song. You can’t mix this message up. There’s only one thing they’re talking about and that’s Jesus. He alone is our rescuer.  Continue reading
