There are so many worries in the world today. We worry about our jobs and the small business down the street. We worry about things in life that we really have no control over to begin with. We worry about health and loved ones who make poor choices that put them in harms way. We worry about lots of things.

My wife and I sit on the porch nearly every night. It’s a time to just unwind and relax a bit. We’ll catch up on the day. We’ll talk about what’s left for us that night. We’ll make sure we have everything on the calendar for the family that we all need to know. And lately we’ve been talking about school and this academic year and the future for our children.

Things have never been more uncertain than they are right now. It appears that nothing in our day to day is consistent.

We can’t get a straight answer from anyone about what’s the right way to handle things in life. Experts change their minds nearly every day. Schools are trying to do their best to keep kids safe but not everyone will agree. We worry what this will do to our children and their ability to learn and grow and establish a meaningful future.

There’s a story in the Bible that really speaks to this idea and it’s woven into the lyrics of this week’s MusicMonday. The song is titled Sparrows and it’s about the birds of the air and the flowers of the field and how they don’t have to worry because God takes care of them.

So if a bird can fly around and not freak out about the forest fires and the winds. And if the flowers can just grow where they’re planted, why can’t we do something similar? Why can’t we live our lives in faith that God is in control.

This week try to let go of the things you can’t control. Try to trust God with the big and the small stuff. When you find yourself full of worry and anxiety and fear, just look to the flowers and the birds. Take a lesson from the sparrows.
