Punishment or Discipline?

I believe the one largest question I receive as a pastor is why is God doing this to me? Another form of this question is what did I do wrong? Why is God punishing me? I get it. I’ll admit sometimes it’s easy to view some of life’s less happy moments as punishment. It’s easy to see the illness, marital struggle, rebellious children, job struggles, financial crises or whatever your personal storm as a punishment from God for something we did wrong. But quite frankly this just isn’t how God operates and to be totally honest it goes completely contrary to the message of who God is.  Continue reading

What Does The Devil Really Want?

I’ve always loved looking at the book of Psalms. It’s filled with real, honest and at times gut-wrenching thoughts poured out of a broken heart. We all too often paint a rosy picture of followers of Jesus having it all together and not facing struggles in life. Or if we do see them struggle we assume they have some super human force that allows them to easily conquer their troubles. But what if that’s exactly what we’re supposed to think? What if we’re supposed to think that a good follower of God will be able to leap small buildings with a single jump? Continue reading
