It’s Really Not That Hard

As a pastor I have to frequently evaluate what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how we’re doing it. The idea is to make sure we’re on track and that we’re being as effective as we possibly can be. But one thing I’ve realized over and over again is that we make life too hard. We have made the gospel far too difficult and have complicated the faith scenario immensely.

Ready, Fire, Aim

Seems like we’ve gotten things a bit out of whack here lately. So much is happening so fast that we have a tendency to fire before we aim! I obviously don’t mean really shoot anything, but we pull the trigger on an activity or a plan before we really give it much thought.

Leadership Ceiling

The past few weeks I’ve been considering leadership especially as it fits our current world stage. For those who’ve been in leadership positions where their job dictates they make decisions and lead people, these last couple of months have been undoubtedly trying. Let me start by saying thank you for your work. No matter your field, leading through crisis is not easy. But I believe crisis sorts leaders from managers.

What Gives!

It’s hard to even know what day it is anymore. We get up only to realize we don’t have to even shower before doing the work the day holds. The children won’t roll out of bed until they want to, which is far later than they used to. We’re getting more sleep than we did before but we’re more exhausted than ever before. What gives!

It’s Time To Re-Open

Warning: contained in this post are my personal thoughts and feelings. They are not necessarily those of all the people I serve or even live with for that matter. They are mine. And just like I respect your right to possess and act on your thoughts and feelings, I’m asking the same from you.

Driving People to Drink

I love chips and salsa! I will frequently grab a bowl full of salsa and a bag of tortilla chips and sit down for a quick snack. But there’s one problem. Chips and salsa have a lot of salt in them! The more you eat the more thirsty you get. The more chips I eat the more water I need. It’s like a never ending cycle! Salt naturally makes you thirst and desire liquid refreshment!

Remember 9.11.01

For those of us who lived that terrifying day the details will forever be burned in our brains. We’ll remember where we were and who was with us. We’ll remember the eerie silence in the air when all planes were grounded across the country. We’ll remember the horrifying images and the gut wrenching and raw emotion of the news casters as they brought us the details as they unfolded. We’ll never forget, or will we?  Continue reading

Light It Up!

One of my favorite bible verses comes from one of the most intimidating books of the bible, Revelation. In this book, John writes his view of the end of the world from heaven’s perspective. It’s a wonderful book filled with rich imagery, meaningful promises and some fairly terrifying examples. Nestled in this book are seven letters written to seven churches throughout the region of Asia minor. But these letters aren’t just for these churches. I have a hunch there’s something for you and me today. Continue reading

Losing Control

Confession time: I’m a control freak. And not just a minor version of this either. I’m a Type-A control freak. Being a control freak doesn’t mean that I’m always in control or that it even has to be all my way. It just means that I have a tendency to look at the outcomes of a situation before they happen. I work diligently to anticipate problems and create solutions before they become problems.  Continue reading

Opinions

While out to dinner not too long ago, I noticed how the people at the table asked to have their food cooked. Some like their steak well done, almost like a hockey puck. Others prefer to cook just long enough to make sure it’s no longer alive. Then there are those who like to have theirs cooked with just enough pink remaining that the juices fill your mouth when you eat it. We don’t get upset when someone wants a medium rare steak. We could care less if someone wants theirs dry and tough.  Continue reading
