Two Really Big Words

Church Words Wordle

I’ll be the first to admit it. In church-topia we have our own dialect. Sometimes you walk through the doors of a church building on a Sunday morning and it’s like you’ve entered a foreign country. You hear all kinds of things that are just not part of everyday speech. Actually some of the things we do in a worship service are a bit confusing but that’s a topic for another time. A Day To Remember

Where were you? Do you remember where you were on this day 15 years ago? Do you remember what you were doing when you heard the news on the day evil was unleashed on our nation? On a day marked by the numbers of our call for help (9/11) we were crippled in fear and horror. Yet we were energized by anger and hatred. How could someone do something so atrocious? Our stomachs ached as we watched the second plane plunge into the second tower. We crumbled when we heard of acts of heroism and valor. On that day we vowed, with no uncertainty, We will never forget! Continue reading

Men Plan God Laughs

plnThere’s a pretty big fad pushing its way through our culture these days. It’s the trend of LifeCoaching. A Life Coach is someone who, for a relatively sizable sum of money, will walk you through some of life’s challenging moments and help you determine the proper trajectory on which your life should run. They help you determine something called a Life Plan. While their version may not be called exactly that, it will undoubtedly contain some basis for decision-making, what you want to be when you grow up, how to succeed, where you should apply yourself, etc. Continue reading

With Every Act Of Love

jason-gray-with-every-act-of-loveThe Lord’s Prayer is a pretty powerful tool for many Christians. We pray it and often don’t really give it much thought whatsoever. Some of those words that we pray go like this thy kingdom come, thy will be done… What does it mean for God’s kingdom to come?  Continue reading

Try this once, take a look in the mirror. What do you see? Describe it, but not in terms of features rather describe yourself in terms of value, image, and worth. This is not a matter of pride nor is it conceited to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you’re worth it. Actually, it’s kind of biblical if you really think about it. Counter Culture #4 – Christian?

It’s a matter of identity. We put a lot of weight into identity and how we see ourselves. But the fact of the matter is, a lot of our identity is determined by things that really don’t matter. This week Pastor Derrick wraps up his Counter Culture sermon series by answering an identity question: How do I know that I’m a Christian?

Pushing On A Pull Door

pullWhat an embarrassing moment that was! Not too long ago, I was trying to get out the door to a store. I walked up to the door, admittedly not paying attention to what was in front of me. I grabbed the handle and pushed the door. It didn’t open, so I pushed a little harder. Then I jiggled the handle.

Wouldn’t you know it…the door was a pull door! I was so embarrassed that I can’t even put it into words. My face turned red. I played it off as if it was no big deal, but that didn’t change the fact that I missed the big red sign right in front of me that said PULLContinue reading
