Set A Fire

Have you ever had one thing you just couldn’t get enough of? Maybe it was dinner at your favorite restaurant and you just wanted more. Maybe it was a day of vacation and you didn’t want to go back to work so you wanted more vacation. Maybe it was a person, maybe there is a person in your life that is so amazing you just always want to be around them. Jesus wants us to want Him. To desire Him. To crave Him so much that we cry out “I want more”.

Why Are You Doing That?

I’m always leery when someone comes back from a conference and starts to change everything. Once upon a time I was that guy who heard a powerful speaker and came back to try to do much of what the other person did. But that’s just not a good idea. It’s not healthy at all! And there’s a much better way.

I Think I Can

Growing up many of us read the kids’ book The Little Engine That Could. This story is one of encouragement and confidence. The moral of the story is that this little engine believed he could accomplish the massive task in front of him. It was a mountain of a task, pun intended! You see he had to pull a loaded train over a tall mountain and no one was willing to help him. Instead of throwing in the towel and giving up, he dug deep and saw the mountain one revolution of his little wheels at a time. The book is filled with his never ending chorus – I think I can.

Church It’s Time To Wake Up!

A recent article was released by John Cooper, lead singer of the Christian rock band Skillet. This article struck a cord in my heart so I thought it might be something worth diving into here on the blog. Let me start by saying that I totally and completely support what Cooper wrote and the direct nature of his words. I couldn’t have said it any better. But I do have a fear of how this will be read, hence me adding my two cents worth.

Tyranny Of The Urgent

Last week in the post titled What’s the point? I referenced the idea of the tyranny of the urgent. And as promised here’s a quick rundown of what that looks like and how to better manage the important and urgent portions of life. Before we begin, I must confess. There was a time in my life when I was something called an adrenaline junky. Adrenaline Junkies are dangerous people. We’re dangerous because there’s not a lot we can’t do but we’ll run most people over in an effort to get them done. Additionally, they’re dangerous because they get all fired up and go like gangbusters when they’re pushed to the limit of time and ability.

The Answer Is…

For millennia there has been a constant in the world. It’s the same yesterday, today and will be honestly forever. The problem however is that we tend to not live like we already know the answer. We try to add a little here or change a little there. We make a tweak or a twist and try to put our own little spin on things. But the reality of the matter is in our lives there really and truly is one answer to the struggles, pains, loneliness and other issues we face. There’s only one real place to go where we can find meaning and peace and comfort and connection beyond our ability to grasp.

What’s The Point?

There are some days when you just get to the end of the day and you wonder what was the point of this day anyway? I mean what’s the point of a day spent getting nothing on your calendar knocked off? Or what about the task list that is ever growing and seemingly never getting something taken off the list? Are days when you don’t get anything done really a wasted day?

Build My Life

What kinds of things define who you are? What kinds of things make your day? What about ruin them? We all have a tendency to put too much weight into one thing and not enough into another. We gravitate to things that provide instant gratification. But what happens when the job is lost or the diet no longer works or exercise isn’t giving us the results we’re hoping! What happens then? What happens when we realize we’ve probably built our lives on simply the wrong things?

Circles of Influence

This week in our message at Living Word Galena we looked at an account in the bible from the book of Acts. It’s the time known as the ascension. This is the account of Jesus being taken up into heaven. You can find the whole story here, but here’s a quick summary.  Continue reading

Behind The Curtain

One of the staples growing up was to watch the movie The Wizard of Oz. As you may know, the movie is the story of a girl who’s transported by a tornado to a far away fantasy land that’s in Dorothy’s words not Kansas anymore. As the story unfolds, we journey with Dorothy along the clearly marked, yellow brick road to find the city of Oz. It’s home to a great and powerful wizard. Along the way, Dorothy picks up a few friends who each have their struggles, but Dorothy convinces them that help can be found in the great Wizard of Oz. Continue reading
